What is SELT?
SELT stands for Secure English Language Test. These tests are approved by the UK Home Office for a range of visa and immigration applications. Trinity College London offers SELT qualifications at different levels depending on the purpose of your application. Exams are taken at authorised Trinity SELT test centres.

Why do I need a SELT?
SELT qualifications are recognised by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and may be required for:
- British Citizenship (Naturalisation)
- Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
- Settlement applications
- Family visas and visa extensions
- Skilled Worker visas
- Health and Care Worker visas
- Student visas
- Other professional and immigration routes
The qualification required depends on your individual circumstances and visa type.
English language requirements are changing. From 26 March 2027, most applicants for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) will need to demonstrate B2 level English, replacing the previous B1 requirement for many settlement routes. If you are planning to apply for settlement in the future, it is important to check which level applies to your circumstances and begin preparing early.

What level SELT do I need?
The level of exam you need depends on what you want to do.
A1 SELT (GESE Grade 2)
- Family Partner visas
- Family Parent visas
- Further Leave to Remain applications
A2 SELT (GESE Grade 3)
- Family visa extensions
B1 SELT (GESE Grade 5)
- Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
- Settlement applications
- British Citizenship (Naturalisation)
Many people currently preparing for ILR are familiar with the B1 requirement. However, from 26 March 2027, most ILR applicants will be required to demonstrate B2 English proficiency. If you expect to apply for settlement after this date, our team can help you understand the requirements and identify the most appropriate learning pathway.
ISE Qualifications (B1, B2 and C1)
- Skilled Worker visas
- Health and Care Worker visas
- Student visas
- Minister of Religion visas
- Innovator and Start-up visas
- Other professional routes
If you are unsure which examination you need, our team can help guide you to the correct qualification.
