Volunteering for Odils in ESOL classes

Volunteering opportunities at Odils

We offer the opportunity for volunteers to join our ESOL classes. If you are interrested please read below and contact our Volunteers Coordinator Sarah at squeen@odils.com , via phone or social media.

How many volunteers does Odils need?

Odils started as a voluntary organisation and we know that volunteers can make a big difference to our school.

We currently have a team of about 25 volunteers across Plymouth and Saltash, but we are always happy to welcome more.

What do volunteers do?

Most of our volunteers help students in their English classes. We also have volunteers in the crèche, and some people offer help with particular skills for example, pronunciation or creative writing.

Our Aish Conversation Clubs are also run by volunteers.

How much time do I need to commit?

We ask classroom or crèche volunteers to regularly commit to one or two 2 hour sessions each week.

Who can be a volunteer?

Our volunteers come from many different backgrounds. Some are retired teachers, others would like to train to be English teachers and some are interested in meeting people from other countries and cultures.

You don’t need any particular skills or experience. The most important things are patience, as well as good English.

We encourage our students to help, but the minimum English level to be a volunteer is Level 1 ESOL/Intermediate.

To volunteer in the crèche you will need to have a full DBS check.

What do our volunteers say?

“it’s been an incredibly rewarding experience! I’ve learned how to listen actively, express myself clearly, and foster a welcoming and inclusive learning environment.” Sepideh

“it’s a privilege to come in and help and I’ve enjoyed the year very much” Liz

“I really enjoy coming and am learning so much about the many different cultures represented by the students, as well as seeing their progress.” Sue

“It was a pleasure to go into Frederick Street, I enjoyed my time with the ladies, and everyone made me so welcome” Gill

“I get out more than I put in I assure you“ Vicky

“Your work and the opportunity to watch all the good you do profoundly affected me and helped highlight that I would like to dedicate my life to doing the same.” Hannah
